While I don’t really care for Bob Dylan and don’t think that he could carry a tune in a bucket, I do have to agree with one thing he said. The times are definitely changing. Today’s culture is one that has been fed with 10 second sound bites, information at the tips of your fingers, and everything you could possibly want at any time you could want it. Problems are solved in 30 minute sitcoms with a laugh track and witty remarks. The attention span of the average human is now so short that if you don’t catch it and keep it within the first few seconds, it has already moved on to something more appealing or eye-catching. Everything is about entertainment and how it makes a person feel. It is a shallow, quickly moving stream that an inattentive person could easily get lost and drown in. It is in this time, this culture, and this mindset that the church of Christ finds itself. And it is here that the church finds itself changing. Continue Reading Is this church? (long)…

It seems that more and more these days people are asking one simple question. It may take a few different forms, but at it’s root, it’s all the same: “What has Jesus done for me?”. Sometimes it comes out in the attitudes, sometimes in actual words but it’s there none the less. Man’s pride puts himself at the top of the pyramid with everything else beneath him. Even family and friends are often under self. Some that ask this question, do so because they can’t see how Jesus has done anything for them. They think that they are responsible for their own success. Ironically, they always seem to blame God for their failures. Continue Reading What has Jesus done for me? (long)…

When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
It’s somewhat odd that such a short passage of scripture would contain the beginnings of the fall and corruption of mankind, but it does. These three verses show the process of how Adam and Eve fell then, and how man still falls today. In the 6,000 or so years that the earth has been around, the process hasn’t changed. So why does it still happen? How do we recognize it when it comes our way? How do we stop it from affecting us? Continue Reading Genesis 3:6-8…

Have you ever had a moment to stop and look at your life? Have you ever stopped, examined your life and where you are, and wondered: How did I get here? I’ve done that a few times and it’s always been eye-opening. I never seem to have been where I thought I was. Sometimes I was further along than I thought and other times I wasn’t as far along as I expected. As I looked back on the path that I trod to get where I was, when I began studying where I walked, I could easily see the things that had gotten me off track. Things like disobedience, willful blindness, and sin led me off of the narrow path and out into the weeds. Because of my lack of diligence or awareness I had to work harder to get back on the path. I had to push through painful thorns and cut through the vines of worldliness that were trying to hold me down and choke me out. Through God’s grace alone, I am here. I’m cut up, bruised, and worn out, but I’m here. As I was pondering these things, I couldn’t help but wonder if the body of Christ has ever done this. I can think of one time when I would say this happened, but other than that, I don’t think that something like this has ever taken place. I wonder why? Does the church not see where it is? Do they not care where they are going? Or are they afraid of what they’ll find? Regardless of the reason, I think that the church would benefit from taking a little time to look at where it is in the face of the state of the world. Continue Reading How did we get here?…

Yesterday, America celebrated it’s birthday. The first Independence Day happened July 4th, 1776. It marked the moment when a group of British colonies had become an entirely new nation. This nation was built on Christian principles and came to be so that the people in the colonies could worship the God of the Bible as they felt they were commanded to. They wanted to be free from the tyranny of the Roman Catholic Church and the king of Britain. The people of the colonies fought and many gave their lives in order for this freedom to be achieved and they expected their descendants to not only understand the cost of this freedom, but to keep fighting for it. Sadly, today’s America is a far cry from what the Founding Fathers expected or hoped for. The American people have given up the fight for their freedom and allowed smooth-talking, deceitful, self-righteous men and women to take these freedoms away from us. We have fallen asleep and our freedoms are slowly disappearing while we don’t care. Continue Reading Independence…
