Today, we move to the second chapter of Genesis. Here, we will be taking a look at the final day of Creation. Before we do this, it is important to know a couple things about how modern society looks at this part of the Bible, the book of Genesis, the Bible as a whole, and Christianity. Many today say that the history found in the first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis aren’t literal history. Instead, these “scholars” say that the first eleven chapters contain allegorical or fictional accounts that were meant to help man express his lack of understanding of the “real world”. To those “scholars”, the facts in the first chapters of Genesis are ignored because it would mean they would have to humble themselves and admit that they don’t know everything. Yesterday, America celebrated it’s birthday. The first Independence Day happened July 4th, 1776. It marked the moment when a group of British colonies had become an entirely new nation. This nation was built on Christian principles and came to be so that the people in the colonies could worship the God of the Bible as they felt they were commanded to. They wanted to be free from the tyranny of the Roman Catholic Church and the king of Britain. The people of the colonies fought and many gave their lives in order for this freedom to be achieved and they expected their descendants to not only understand the cost of this freedom, but to keep fighting for it. Sadly, today’s America is a far cry from what the Founding Fathers expected or hoped for. The American people have given up the fight for their freedom and allowed smooth-talking, deceitful, self-righteous men and women to take these freedoms away from us. As our nation and the world continue to struggle with societal woes, everyone rushes around searching for the answers. They run tests, perform studies, and survey people to find out what is going on. In all of this, they neglect the very thing that can help them fix all of the problems that we will ever face.
In America, the problems continue to grow as the government no longer cares to listen to the people it governs. Instead, it sits in its ivory tower with ears plugged and tells the country exactly what is best for it without having a shred of evidence that this is so. Meanwhile, the things that America so desperately needs continue to dwindle away to nothing. Those things that have made this nation what it is disappear at a growing rate, being eroded by the newest fad or the most recent study. This time of year, you see it all over the place – “Jesus is the reason for the season”. I guess it’s an effort to try and get people to focus on the real meaning of Christmas, but as I was thinking about all of this, I had some questions about it. Is Jesus really the reason for the season in the hearts and minds of most people? Is this just a weak attempt to try and evangelize without having to really do anything? If people know Jesus as He’s portrayed in the Bible, should this be necessary?
I understand the statement and I totally agree with it. Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season. Of course, He’s the reason for every other season as well… The problem comes when I see the same people that tell me that Jesus is the reason for the season slide tackling an 80 year old woman and hurdling two shopping carts full of crying newborns (who were dragged out into the freezing cold weather at 4 a.m.) just so that they can join in a death match for the last Patty Wets-her-pants. Ok, so it may be more than a little problem…I guess I have gotten to where I don’t understand some of the things that people do in the name of celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus. We trek out to the malls to find that perfect gift for that special someone at the best price. All the while, we gripe about the traffic and the waiting in line. Meanwhile, we try as hard as we can to latch on to the Christmas carol playing over the mall speakers so that we can drown out the horrible groans our conscience is making as it keeps a running total of how much we’re spending. The only solace is that we’re using our credit cards so fast there is a slight chance that they will actually melt before we spend ourselves out of house and home and into oblivion. When the amount actually does register, it reminds us to pick up that super-sized bottle of Tums so that we stay healthy enough to come up with a plan for paying off all the debt we’re building up.
