After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.” Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.” Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. And He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.” He said, “O Lord GOD, how may I know that I will possess it?” So He said to him, “Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds. The birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. Continue Reading Genesis 15…

Genesis 14

And it came about in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). All these came as allies to the valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). Twelve years they had served Chedorlaomer, but the thirteenth year they rebelled. In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim and the Zuzim in Ham and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, and the Horites in their Mount Seir, as far as El-paran, which is by the wilderness. Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and conquered all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, who lived in Hazazon-tamar. And the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah and the king of Admah and the king of Zeboiim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) came out; and they arrayed for battle against them in the valley of Siddim, against Chedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goiim and Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar–four kings against five. Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell into them. But those who survived fled to the hill country. Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food supply, and departed. They also took Lot, Abram’s nephew, and his possessions and departed, for he was living in Sodom. Sermon Sunday – J.C. Ryle – Authentic Religion

Authentic Religion
by
J. C. Ryle
(1816-1900)

“Rejected silver” (Jeremiah 6:30)

“Nothing but leaves” (Mark 11:13)

“Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth”
(1 John 3:18).

“You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead” (Revelation 3:1)

If we profess to have any religion at all, let us be careful that it is authentic.  I say it emphatically, and I repeat the saying: Let us be careful that our religion is authentic.

What do I mean when I use the word “authentic.”  I mean that which is genuine, and sincere, and honest, and thorough.  I mean that which is not inferior, and hollow, and formal, and false, and counterfeit, and sham, and nominal.  “Authentic” religion is not mere show, and pretense, and skin-deep feeling, and temporary profession, and works only on the outside.  It is something inward, solid, substantial, intrinsic, living, lasting.  We know the difference between counterfeit and authentic money–between solid gold and tinsel–between plated metal and silver–between authentic stone and plaster imitation.  Let us think of these things as we consider the subject of this paper.  What is the character of our religion?  Is it authentic?  It may be weak, and feeble, and mingled with many defects.  That is not the point before us today.  Is our religion authentic?  Is it true?

The times in which we live demand attention to this subject.  A want of authenticity is a striking feature of a vast amount of religion in the present day.  Poets have sometimes told us that the world has passed through four different states or conditions.  We have had a golden age, and a silver age, a brass age, and an iron age.  How far this is true, I do not stop to inquire.  But I fear there is little doubt as to the character of the age in which we live.  It is universally an age of cheap metal and alloy.  If we measure the religion of the age by its apparent quantity, there is much of it.  But if we measure it by its quality, there is indeed very little.  On every side we want MORE AUTHENTICITY. A buried treasure

Think of something precious to you. Not someone, some thing. Maybe this is a ring that has been handed down in your family for generations. Maybe this is a tool your grandfather gave you. It may be something from a loved one who is no longer here. Whatever it is, think about it. Could you describe it to me? What color is it? How big is it? What is it made of? Does it have any distinguishing features? Do you remember the day that you got it? Where you were? What was going on when you got it?

For most of us this exercise comes pretty easily. As humans, we hold on to those things that we hold dear. The things that are most important to use have a prominent place in our hearts. Now, think back on that object that is precious to you. See yourself holding it (if possible). Now imagine that you took the item outside; somewhere in your backyard. And you dug a hole, dropped that precious object into it, covered it back up with dirt, and tamped it down. Continue Reading A buried treasure…

Veterans

This Wednesday America will celebrate Veteran’s Day. With what recently happened in Fort Hood, it brought to mind some things that I just wanted to share. When I heard about the shootings in Texas, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that it could happen on a military base. Of all of the places where someone should be safe, you would think it would be there. One of the first things found out about the shooter was that he was a Muslim. I can honestly say that I wasn’t shocked at all to hear this. More and more I’m finding it harder to tolerate all of the people in this country who talk about Islam being a religion of peace. Sure, the Islamic groups in this country have spoken out against the attack in Texas and even went so far as to call the man a coward. But, I can’t help but wonder if they would call all the other Muslims who have violently and aggressively attacked non-Muslims cowards? If so, then they either haven’t read the Quran or they haven’t been truthful. Those who are naive enough to believe that just because Muslims say that Islam is the religion of peace that means it’s true may be the same people who voted for the current president because they believed what he said to them.

Islam is not the religion of peace and I’ve talked about this in other blogs on this site. Anyone who has spent any time reading the Quran can see that peace through submission is only a paper thin facade for all out holy war against all non-Muslims (and sometimes even other Muslims who disagree). What I don’t understand is why people are still buying into the lie and trying to promote peace between Muslims and other religions when Muslims don’t want it? What really irritates me is when it is Christians who promote the ecumenism. Don’t they realize that Muslims don’t believe that Jesus is God? How can there be any common ground? The tragedy in Fort Hood is a direct result of the post-modern moralism that has taken over our country. And unless something is done to change it, things will only get worse… Continue Reading Veterans…

Christianity and Islam…the same?

Many high profile (and not so high profile) media personalities have jumped on board the bandwagon shouting that there is little or no difference between Christianity and Islam. Really? Is this something that these media people know something about? Have they actually looked at the two belief systems to see if there are any differences or are they just doing this because if fashionable (or more likely, because Christianity has moral laws that many of these media people live in conflict with…)?

First, let’s do a simple run down of what the basic beliefs are for both religions.

Islam is a monotheistic religion that is centered upon the god Allah and “his prophet” Mohammed. It began when Mohammed was in a cave and (supposedly) was visited by the angel Gabriel(around 600 AD). It is believed that Gabriel gave Mohammed the Quran in it’s true form that had been preserved in heaven. Islam believes that Jesus was a prophet, teacher, and wise, moral, man. It believes that Abraham is the father of the faith and that he went up on Mount Moriah to sacrifice Ishmael. It believes that Ishmael is the promised son and not Isaac. It says that it is the completion of the truth found in the Torah and Bible with the Quran being the final say. It believes that Mohammed is the final prophet and the “seal of the prophets”. It believes that the Torah and the Bible have both been corrupted over time. Continue Reading Christianity and Islam…the same?…
