Genesis 4:1-7

Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.” Again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.”

This week, we begin to see what happens after the Fall. We see how quickly the sinful nature takes hold of what was once a perfect creation. If you recall, Adam and Eve have been ousted from the garden of Eden because they disobeyed God and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They’ve returned to where Adam was made and have settled there. Imagine for a minute being the only two people on the entire planet. It was always this way, but now, things are different. Now, you don’t have fellowship with God like you used to. Now, sin and death have entered the world and everything is a little more ominous. And yet, in all of this there is hope brought about by the promise given by God.

Eventually, Adam and Eve have a child and name him Cain. When Cain is born, she says, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord”. There is something interesting here though. In many Bibles, the phrase “the help of” is in italics. That means that this phrase isn’t found in the original writings. That would make Eve’s original quote, “I have gotten a manchild with the Lord”. The implication here is that the promise was going to be fulfilled in Cain. While she was wrong about that, it does show that Eve held on to the promise that God gave her. After Cain’s birth follows Abel’s. We don’t have any idea how much time passed from the expulsion of Adam and Eve to Cain’s birth or between Cain’s birth and Abel’s but, we do know that Adam was 130 years old when Seth (the third son) was born. This means that the Fall, expulsion, birth of Cain, birth of Abel, murder of Abel, and birth of Seth all happened within 130 years of the creation.

Again, we aren’t given any indication of what happened as the boys grew other than the jobs they took on. Abel was a tender of the flocks and Cain was a tiller of the ground. The Bible says that “in the course of time” Cain brought an offering from the fruit of the ground. For his offering, Abel brought of the first born of his flock and their fat portions. Many people gloss over this (if not the entirety of chapters 4 and 5) but it’s important. Here we see that Cain and Abel both recognize that they are to give offerings to the Lord. This must have been something that Adam and Eve taught them to do. This in turn means that it is something that Adam and Eve did. From the beginning, man has been giving offerings to the Lord. Not only that, but it shows what type of offerings they were bringing. In the next few verses, we see that the Lord regarded Abel’s sacrifice, but He didn’t regard (accept) Cain’s. Why? If Cain was a tiller of the ground and God knew that, why would He disregard his offering? The reason is simple and it points to a basic problem that man will have until Christ returns. Man wants to do things his own way instead of doing them God’s way.

How do I know this? Well, from personal experience, from seeing it happen in others, and from what God says to Cain when he gets angry. God reminds Cain that if he “does well” his countenance will be lifted up. This implies that Cain knew that he was to bring a blood sacrifice. This is what Abel brought. I would suppose that this is because of what God did when man first sinned against him in the garden. Do you remember? God killed two animals to make clothes for Adam and Eve. Abel offers a blood sacrifice in remembrance of that. Cain does not. But, there is more to it then that. When God talks to Cain, He says that if Cain does well, his countenance will be lifted up. Cain was angry and crestfallen because God didn’t accept the sacrifice that he decided to bring to him. But, God says that if he “does well” he will be lifted up again. I can’t say with certainty because scripture doesn’t say for sure, but I believe that God was showing Cain that all he had to do was offer up a blood sacrifice. I believe that if Cain would have talked to Abel and asked for or traded for a sheep or goat, Abel would have given it. Cain could have sacrificed the way that God required and Abel’s death would not have taken place.

How often do we try to manipulate things or do things our way and hope that God blesses them? We do all that we can to work and get things set up just so, and when God refuses to bless something that wasn’t the way He wanted it done, we get mad and sin against Him and others. God warns Cain (and us) that if we are angry, sin crouches at our door and waits for us, desiring us to let it in. How many times have you heard on the news about some tragedy that has taken place just because someone got angry over something? It happens all the time and usually it is for the stupidest reasons. God warns us that if we will “do well” and make sure that we do things the way that He wants us to, we will have our countenances lifted up and we will master sin!

Will you be like Abel or like Cain? In the book of 1 John, John reminds us that we are not to love one another like Cain loved Abel. Cain didn’t really love Abel. If he did, he wouldn’t have killed him. When we get angry at others for walking according to scripture and in obedience to God, do we really love them? John says that the message that we’ve heard from the beginning is to love one another. The word that John uses for love in that verse is the Greek word agape. It is the God kind of love. Many people know this and can tell you this, but can they describe it? What does agape love really look like? The greatest example of agape love is the death of Jesus on the cross for sinful mankind. He was spotless and without sin and yet, He went through the ridicule, the mocking, the scourging, the crucifixion, and the wrath of God for those who hate Him. He hung on the cross and forgave those who put Him there. This is agape love and it’s the way that Christians are supposed to love others.

As we end this week, let me ask you: Do you love with agape love? Are you prepared to die for someone else? Someone that isn’t in your family? Someone that hates you? Someone that you don’t like? This is agape

As always, comments, questions, suggestions, and complaints are welcome. Just leave them below and I’ll try to get to them as soon as I can. Next week we continue with the murder of Abel. See you then!

KS governor’s fete honors abortionist

The pro-life group Operation Rescue says that it is almost impossible to get anyone in Kansas to bring criminal charges against abortionist George Tiller because he has an important ally – Governor Kathleen Sebelius. While calls have increased for charges to be brought against Tiller, the governor threw a secret party for Tiller and his staff. Operation Rescue has tried to gain information on who paid for the party under the Kansas Open Records Act. They have been given very little in the way of information. They say that the taxpayers have a right to know whether or not they paid for the party. They also say that it’s become more obvious why criminal charges haven’t been brought against Tiller. Not only that, according to OR, the groups that could bring charges against Tiller are filled with appointees of the governor.

As upset as I would be to find out that my money was going to fund things like parties for an abortionist, I can’t say that I’m surprised. Like many corporations, most of those in the government follow the money. The Kansas governor received a lot of funding from Tiller. Should we be surprised if she helps Tiller when he gave her a lot of money? Tiller is an abortionist. He kills children! Why would the government advocate the killing of children and allow this? Because they’re not believers…

Countdown to Calif. confusion continues

As the day draws near, the confusion grows concerning “homosexual marriage” and its legality. The California Supreme court recently made “homosexual marriage” legal in the state. The bill is supposed to take effect June 14th even though appeals have been made to get the court to delay the ruling. The court has denied delaying the approval. Many in opposition have expressed concern for the fact that if the ban that will be on the November ballot (see below) passes, they will end up revoking all those licenses. In the state of California, for an amendment to get on the ballot, it needs 694,000 signatures. The “gay marriage” ban has received 1.1 million signatures.

This country’s judicial, legal, and legislative institutions need a severe overhaul. We have judges legislating their own values from the bench instead of those held by the majority of Americans. We have congressmen and women going to jail for improper conduct. We have governors and senators involved in improper relationships outside of marriage and other despicable acts. These are the people that are supposed to be leading our country! Is it any wonder why our country is where it currently is? Is it any wonder why our nation continues to turn its back on God to pursue its own perverted lusts? And while I want to blame the leaders of our country, the blame isn’t totally theirs. It’s ours too! WE VOTED THEM INTO OFFICE! If someone is in office and they are acting in a way that goes against our desires, then we have the say as to whether or not they stay in office! We need leaders that are going to put our nation and the American people above themselves. We need people that truly care about our country and its people. I pray that the ban passes and this issue gets decided by the people of California…

Presbyterians Divided on Gay Ordination Ahead of Major Meeting

The Presbyterian Church is split on whether or not to ordain homosexual clergy. They will have a meeting this month where the issue is expected to be debated again. Those opposed to the ban have varied ideas on what should be done with the ban. Some want it completely removed from the constitution and other want to “soften the language” of the ban. Currently, the constitution says that to be ordained, a person requires “fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman” or “chastity in singleness”. The Presbyterian Church is not the only one that is having trouble dealing with homosexuality. The Methodist Church has also dealt with this issue when they affirmed their ban on homosexual pastors and declared that homosexual pastors are “incompatible with Christian teaching”.

I am still at a loss as to why this is an issue in the church. There is nothing in scripture that shows any “wiggle room” to allow homosexuals to be pastors. To be honest, scripture makes it clear that homosexuals are in rebellion to God and therefore can’t be considered Christians. For the church to waffle on this issue shows a lack of understanding of the scriptures, the character of God, and the purpose of the church. The PC(USA) and other churches need to make it clear where the scriptures stand on the issue and then enforce it!

Obama Quits Chicago Church Steeped in Controversy

Barack Obama recently resigned “with some sadness” from the church he had been going to for the last 20 years. Obama said in his resignation letter, released by campaign officials on Friday, that “he’s not denouncing the church” and that “he’s not interested in the people that want him to denounce the church”. He also said that this was a decision the he and his wife had been discussing since Reverend Jeremiah Wright appeared at the National Press Club in Washington last month. Between the remarks that Wright made and those made by a visiting preacher last week, Obama has been criticized for being a part of the church. Wright was Barack Obama’s spiritual mentor for the 20 years that he was attending the church. Obama said that “this was a pretty personal decision and I was not trying to make political theater out of it”.

I saw in another place someone asked an interesting question. Jeremiah Wright was Barack Obama’s spiritual mentor for 20 years. The mentor is no longer a part of his life, but what about the 20 years of teaching? I also had to laugh about one comment Obama made. He said that this decision was “a pretty personal decision and I was not trying to make political theater out of it”. If it was so personal, why did his campaign leaders release the letter to the public? If it wasn’t supposed to have anything to do with politics or improving his image to the public, then why was it released? It just seems awful fishy to me… I also have to ask why he didn’t denounce the church? If they are teaching falsely, why shouldn’t he denounce the church? If they are being controversial and saying things from the pulpit that Christians shouldn’t be saying, why wouldn’t he denounce the church? Also, why wouldn’t he want to be involved with the people that expect him to denounce the church? Is it because they’re the same people that are against abortion and homosexuality? Is it because they are solid in their beliefs and understanding of scripture and would have to disagree with Obama himself? I can only hope that those Christians who support Obama will pay attention to what he’s saying and whether or not it lines up with the scriptures…

China Crackdown Hits House Churches Hard

China Aid Association says that house churches have been hit hard with a wave of arrests and detentions. House churches have been disbanded and two people have even been arrested as “separatists”. The government has even put up signs saying that local citizens should report “evil cult activity”, which includes house churches. A Bible school was closed on May 13th and two days later, the Public Security Bureau broke up a prayer meeting being held for the earthquake victims and the Olympics. The government also turned away or arrested house church members who volunteered to help the victims of the earthquake.

This is sad. All that the Christians in China want is to be able to worship God freely. To turn away help from volunteers when your country has just suffered a HUGE tragedy and need all the help that they can get, it’s ludicrous. Do the Christians have “cooties”? Why would you turn away the help? Christianity is “evil cult activity”? Are they that afraid of Christianity? It’s sad to see this kind of thing happening in China. I can’t help but wonder if this is where America is headed…

UK Officer Tells Preachers: Converting Muslims to Christianity is “Hate Crime”

Two Christian preachers were threatened with arrest for preaching the gospel to Muslims. The threats came from a Muslim community support officer who heard the preaching. The officer said that the preaching of the gospel in the Muslim area was equal to a “hate crime”. After the threatening, the officer and a few others called in for help said that the preachers couldn’t count on the police for help if they found themselves in trouble. The pastors expressed their outrage at the lack of support from the police, who refused to apologize for the actions of the officer. They said that they were surprised that the police were so “nonchalant”, considering that Britain is a free country and what the pastors were doing was perfectly legal. To the pastors, this is an example of the “no go” areas that have been said to exist even though they have been denied by the government. The pastors have initiated a legal action against the West Midlands Police, saying their treatment violated articles 9 and 10 of the 1998 Human Rights Act, which guarantees freedom of religious expression.

I am truly saddened by the decay that Britain has seen in its Christian culture. I know that things are not altogether gone yet, but it seems to be heading that way. The preaching of the gospel is always going to offend those who don’t believe (as well as those who do at times), it is a freedom given to Americans and others and should be upheld, regardless of what the police think. The police are public servants and need to be serving the public regardless of whether or not they agree with the public. They are to uphold the law, and not to enforce their own beliefs. This is seen in America as well, but I pray that it will change.

Tenn. ‘Bible in Schools’ Act Awaits Approval

A bill that has passed easily through the Tennessee legislature is currently awaiting signature by the state’s governor. If signed by the governor, the bill would allow Tennessee public school students to have the option to take non-denominational classes on the Bible. The bill’s sponsor, Senator Roy Herron, says that he wants “students to study the greatest and most popular book in history” and “to understand how the Bible has enormously impacted literature, art, music, culture, history and politics”. He also said that he believes “a Bible course will help students understand our culture and our highest and best values”. The bill wouldn’t force schools to teach Bible classes, but it would protect those who do and allow those who don’t to have the option to. 78 of Tennessee’s 95 counties offer Bible courses and that 35 states offer the option of enrolling in elective Bible classes.

I hope that this is a growing trend and that it ends up being true in all 50 states. I think that it is necessary for our kids to understand that evolution is not the concrete theory that it’s made out to be and that there are many problems with it even from a scientific standpoint. When you bring scripture into it, it is clear that evolution and Christianity don’t jive. Unless you were to take scripture and “adjust” it to fit evolutionary ideas, it just can’t work. I think that it is wonderful that Tennessee’s students have the option to take classes that actually spread truth of the gospel.

Home schooling labeled ‘anarchy’

The California Teachers Association has filed a brief in the courts that says that parents should have no right over the education of their kids, should have no right to homeschool their kids, and that homeschooled kids should be forced back into public schools. The union said that allowing kids to be homeschooled by uncredentialed teachers could result in “educational anarchy”. Those in support of homeschooling say that there are over 200,000 kids being homeschooled in California and that they are continually scoring higher than public school kids as well as kids from traditional private schools.

This is a thinly veiled argument for the schools. If I had to guess, this is a tired attempt by the public schools to get money. Because homeschooling is growing, and because the students are doing better than public schools, and because the public schools are having so much trouble with the kids, the public schools have to try and force the state government to force the parents’ hands. The only alternative would be to overhaul the public school system and that’s not going to happen because it would mean that they have to admit they’re wrong. It’s not just California that is seeing problems in public school. Even here in rural Alabama, our schools are seeing troubles. Teachers are being laid off, testing scores are not good, and no one wants to do anything to change it. I’m praise God everyday for my daughter’s mom homeschooling her. It is the most wonderful thing that she could do for our daughter and it has had an amazing effect on her. I would recommend it to anyone who is considering it, as long as you are prepared to pour yourself into your children and work really hard. It’s definitely worth it!

Habitat for Humanity Ends Land Deal With Planned Parenthood

This is just an update on the article that I posted last week. Habitat for Humanity of Sarasota has decided to end the land deal with Planned Parenthood.

Friday’s Newslinks brought to you by At Ease Tees

This week’s newslinks is shorter than normal. One reason is that there wasn’t as much news as was available in other weeks. Another is that some of it I would like to focus a little more attention on in the coming weeks (especially the “Evangelical Manifesto”).

Fix my kid

(I usually don’t put editorials in the newslinks, but I wanted to write on this one…)

This editorial is about how many Christian parents see training their children in the ways of the Lord as taking them to church and Sunday School. According to the article, 70-75 per cent of the kids raised by Christian parents will not live for Jesus as adults. Why? If Christian parents are raising them, why do so many of them live their adult lives away from the Lord? According to the author, it happens for one of two reasons. Either we don’t have the truth of Jesus, or we’re not portraying it correctly. The author says that it’s the latter. The author says that we should be taking every opportunity to teach our children about living for God, and I agree. The saddest thing that a Christian parent can do for the kids is to have the truth and not give it to their children. Too often, Christians put the teaching of scripture off on “those who have been trained”.  They give them to the Sunday school teachers and pastors. This may be a news flash for some of you, but it is not the pastors or teachers who should be training our kids. It’s you! YOU should be teaching them the ways of the Lord and not just with your words. Your kids see how you live your life and whether you realize it or not, they are mimicking you. You can tell them all the scriptures you want, but if you don’t live it out in front of them, they mean absolutely nothing! What’s worse, we often don’t give our kids credit for being smart enough to catch on to us. We think that we’re getting away with living outside the Word and that we’re fooling our kids. The only ones we’re fooling are ourselves. Your kids know right from wrong and your teaching them that it’s ok to let God’s rules slide. Is it any wonder that they’re not following the Lord? You can blame it on the teachers and pastors all you want (and some of them are at fault for teaching to the kids like their 3 year olds), but ultimately it falls on the parents to make sure that their kids are taught the ways of the Lord!

Documents unsealed in Kansas abortion case

In the ongoing battle against abortion in Kansas, documents from two lawsuits were recently unsealed and opened to the public for the first time. One lawsuit was by Planned Parenthood against former attorney general Phill Kline for mishandling patient files from two abortion clinics in Kansas. Edited versions of the files were allowed to be seen by Kline during his investigation into two PP abortion clinics. Three days before Kline left the office of AG (he lost his reelection bid), he had the documents forwarded to the Johnson County district attorney’s office. Not long after, Johnson County picked Kline to fill a vacancy as county prosecutor. PP says that Kline lost rights to the files when he lost his office. District Court Judge Richard Anderson said that he gave Kline permission to forward the documents on to “any other prosecutor Kline might work with”. To me, this shows just how desperate PP is to keep that information under wraps. Regardless of what PP thinks, Kline seems to have done nothing out of line. PP claims that he kept some of the records in a Rubbermaid container in his apartment before transferring them to the Johnson County office. Kline returned with the fact that he was not allowed a locked storage area in his office and that the office was wide open. PP just needs to realize that more and more people are finding out what is really happening behind closed doors and that people are disgusted by it. I hope that this is the beginning of the end for PP…

E.U. Urges Religious Leaders to Boost Climate Change Fight

The European Union urged 20 of the world’s Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders to step up the battle against climate change. The leaders were in Brussels, Belgium to discuss how to fight climate change. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said churches, temples, and mosques all have a role to play in helping to save the planet. While I agree with the statement that Barroso made about churches having a role to play in saving the planet, it’s not the same one that Barroso, the EU, and many Christians seem to be focusing on. The “green” issue has exploded as many people try to stop “global warming”. This is ridiculous. The church does have a role to play in saving the planet. They need to be preaching the gospel! Both Pope Benedict and Bartholomew I have been praised for their aggressive efforts to “save the planet”. I have to ask what they’re doing about the preaching of the gospel though. The pope came to the US for about a week not too long ago, and I don’t recall one time where he preached the gospel. Bartholomew I is the leader of the Orthodox Church and says that the world needs to “repent and change their lifestyle in response to the threats posed by climate change”. The world needs to repent and change their lifestyle, but not in regard to climate change. I can’t help but wonder if both of these “religious leaders” remember what is causing the whole of creation to groan in the first place! It is SIN! (Romans 8:22) What about that? Aren’t we, as the body of Christ, supposed to be preaching the gospel to every creature and teaching them to observe all the things that Christ commanded us (Mark 16/Matt. 28)? While I’m all for doing what we can to protect the environment, when it becomes a religion of its own and takes a higher precedence than what God has set in His Word, something is wrong. The world needs to repent of its sin. If it were to do that, all the other things would take care of themselves…

Chinese City Set to Become Bible Printing Capital of the World

Amity Printing Company, the only Chinese state approved Christian printing company, is set to open the largest Bible printing factory in the world in Nanjing, China. The facility will be able to print up to 12 million Bibles per year, which amounts to about 23 per second. This excites some as interest in Christianity grows in China, which is officially atheist. The largest religious group in China is Buddhism, but Christianity ranks second. The publishers also said that they are looking at releasing audio Bibles that people can listen to on their MP3 players. Does anyone else find this ironic? The world’s largest Bible printing factory isn’t found in a largely Christian nation, it’s found in China! While this news is broadcast, the Chinese government is cracking down on home churches in one area of the country (see below). This just strikes me as strange. I hope that good things come out of it, but I don’t know…

Blasphemous Art Works Remain at Vienna Cathedral Gallery

While the picture depicting the Last Supper as a homosexual orgy has been removed, many of the paintings by self-proclaimed atheist Alfred Hdrlicka still remain in the Dommuseum art gallery attached to the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Vienna. Among the art that still remains is one picture of the scourging of Christ by a nude Roman soldier who is performing a lewd act on the body of Christ. The director, Dr. Bernhard Boehler, said that the international protest against the display of the artwork is akin to the furor raised by Muslim extremists in regard to the Dutch Mohammed cartoons. He also said that the works are “very provocative, problematic” and that “strong believers” would feel that they “might be blasphemous or obscene.” The lack of response from the Archbishop of Vienna has also surprised many people. The idea that “strong believers” would feel that the artwork is “blasphemous or obscene” tells me that the art director of the museum is not in that category. To compare this to the Dutch cartoons is ludicrous. The fact that the museum even allowed this tells me that they have no respect at all for the God they supposedly follow as a “Catholic institution”. This is disgusting and blasphemous and would be considered so by any real Christian. To allow this type of thing in a “Christian” museum is an abomination. The liberal “squishiness” of the art director, the Archibishop, and all of those who condone this goes directly against scripture and is SIN pure and simple…
