Extremists killed 19 Christians, including two professors, as they worshiped on the grounds of Bayero University in Kano, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 22. An additional 22 people were injured.

Christians from two churches, the Chapel of Victory and the St. Stephen Catholic Church, were meeting at the university when unidentified gunmen attacked them at about 9 a.m. The attackers hurled small, homemade explosives into the crowd of worshipers and fired on those trying to escape. They then fled on motorbikes and in a car, according to eyewitnesses.

VOM contacts report that the state governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, visited victims who were receiving treatment in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He promised them that the government would pay for their medical treatment.

Although shaken by the attack, Christian leaders said they will not retaliate.

“We don’t encourage Christians to rise up in attack,” said Bishop Ransome Bello, chairman of Kano’s Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). “Our best weapon of defense is prayers. The security agencies are trying in terms of providing security at churches all over the state, which makes them safe from any attacks. Similar arrangements should have been made for collegiate churches.”

Police are searching for the gunmen, but no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
